Strategic Partnership

Our strategic approach to building the most technical and sophisticated surfing technology on earth caught the attention of long-term collaborators, Siemens. We now leverage their global footprint to provide non-core support and services that provide a foundation layer for our platform.

To highlight this partnership, Siemens commissioned a series of films that take a closer look at how we are working together.

Shaping Waves Not Boards

“If you write the perfect code, you get the perfect wave” - these words are at the core of how Surf Loch is able to programme wave shapes with incredible precision.

This video goes into some details about how we are using Siemens systems to create the most ocean-like manmade waves on the planet.

Introduction Blog series - The vision to revolutionize the surfing industry

What is it about surfing? For many, it’s freedom. It’s a sense of adventure and the feel of riding the wave with the wind and spray hitting you as you come into shore. It’s sun-tanned skin and a sense of community that spans across the globe.

Unfortunately, not everyone gets to experience this. Surfing is dependent on weather and wind conditions; the good spots are generally crowded and beginners struggle to catch waves that seem few and far between.

Why not find a way to give everyone access to the perfect wave?

Blog Series - Part I How do you create a surfer’s perfect wave?

Tom Lochtefeld always dreamt of building a wave park where surfers feel like they’re riding on an actual ocean wave. To create these perfect waves, Lochtefeld, who is the founder and CEO of Surf Loch, needed the technology that controlled various elements, such as power, control and timing of the water all situated within a wave pool.

To develop Surf Loch technology and to get it where it's currently at, Lochtefeld has put his years of experience behind him and has waited for the technology and computing capabilities to get where they’re at now.

Blog Series – Part II How do you create a digital twin of an ocean wave?

How does Surf Loch re-create the perfect ocean waves in a wave pool? They embraced digital transformation while always having the experience of their customers in mind.

Tom Lochtefeld, Surf Loch’s CEO, says: “Making the perfect wave requires an astounding amount of calculation. Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio gives us this capability. We leverage the world’s most comprehensive digital twin within an ecosystem of technology suppliers and equipment providers. This ecosystem allows us to create repeatable waves that all surfer will enjoy.”

By combining the real and digital worlds, Surf Loch created a digital twin of their wave before testing it in their facility

Blog Series – Part III How can technology advance any surfer’s skills?

It’s becoming clear that the cost of technology combined with the ability to create a small pool has made it possible for companies and individuals to have a wave pool on their premises.

Customization based on the size, location and intent is a critical factor in the Surf Loch business model. From a commercial perspective, the buyer of a Surf Loch pool is looking for something that is highly marketable, with high user throughput capacity and the ability to put a large volume of riders through so they can generate revenue per person. Because the surfer will vary in skill level, from first-time riders to professional surfers, it must also be safe, robust and reliable.

Blog Series – Part IV How do you expand the geographic limitations of surfing?

Because the Surf Loch technology is so versatile and customizable, it means it can accommodate surfers of all skill levels, all at the same time regardless of the size of the pool. Even in the smallest pool, waves can be adjusted for the surfer’s skill level.

Scott Pohler, VP of business development at Surf Loch, believes that one of the things that makes these wave pools special is how they’ll motivate current surfers to get better. “You aspire to always progress and improve, and everybody has their different levels whether it's smoothing out your style or wanting to do airs or working on your barrel riding or even using different types of boards.”

Blog Series – Part V How do you combine technology and passion to realize your vision?

Surf Loch’s wave pools will expand interest and enthusiasm to areas thousands of miles from any ocean wave and open up competitive surfing to countless competitors as competitive events won’t be restricted to ocean waves.

How is Surf Loch managing to bring surfing to the masses? It’s a combination of passion and technology. For Tom Lochtefeld and the team, Siemens provides the ability to blur the boundaries of the real and digital worlds, and offers all the technologies to today to build surfing waves of tomorrow.
